According to Nielsen Online, the numero uno online video brand for August 2009 was YouTube, with a total of 7,188,638,000 streams and 107,730,000 unique viewers. Consequently, YouTube had over 18 times as many streams as its nearest competitor – Hulu – and nearly 11 times as many unique viewers. The measurement is based on online video brands, home and work.
Hulu is one of the fastest growing brands among the top 10, which include, in addition to YouTube (#1) and Hulu (#2), Yahoo! (#3), MSN/WindowsLive/Bing (#4), Nickelodeon Kids and Family Network (#5), Turner Sports and Entertainment Digital Network (#6), Fox Interactive Media (#7), Disney Online (#8), MTV Networks Music (#9) and Blinkx (#10). Short form, clip-length video has dominated streaming on the web, as demonstrated by YouTube’s top dog position month after month. However, Hulu has invested time and money in promotions to interest consumers in full length programming, and has had some notable success in tapping demos in the 35-49 age range.
